Jodi Benavidez of Brokedown Clothing is a woman of many hats…literally & figuratively. Previously a West Coast fashion reporter, she is the creator, designer, accountant and backer of the popular line, which started with hats, worn by many celebs including Jessica Alba, Halle Berry, Eva Longoria and Paris Hilton.
It all started back in 2006 in Jodi’s garage in Orange County, California—steeped in sunny SoCal’s cool, casual, laidback lifestyle, which is reflected in her line. It was here that she started embellishing military style cadet hats, which soon became a Hollywood favorite. Since then, her line has expanded to include women’s apparel—from scarves, screen tees and tanks to tunics, thermals and sweat suits.
I recently met with Jodi to get her take on beauty, style and the products she wouldn’t be caught on a deserted island without! Read the full interview below!
WHERE DO YOU LOOK TO FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COLLECTIONS?
My most recent collections were inspired from the 70’s era. I love vintage; my design and inspirations represent a blend of hippie chic and vintage glam style.
IN A COUPLE SENTENCES OR LESS … HOW DID YOU PROPEL YOUR LINE TO WHAT IT IS TODAY?
I started my line in my garage with military style cadet hats that I embellished by hand. They soon became a Hollywood favorite and worn by many celebs. I expanded the line by adding women’s apparel such as screen tees, thermals, dresses, scarves and sweat suits.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVE BEAUTY BRAND? BEAUTY PRODUCT?
One of my favorite beauty brands is Colorescience Pro. I love the Sunforgettable Mineral Powder Brush SPF 30. The application is so easy to use and leaves my skin with an even finish while also providing sun protection.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVES YOU WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT ON A DESERTED ISLAND WITHOUT?
Sunscreen, a hair tie, a bottle of Essie Nail Polish (I am always painting my nails), a large bottle of Smart Water, running shoes and my ipod.
HOW DOES YOUR PERSONAL STYLE MATCH YOUR MAKEUP PERSONALITY?
I love a clean classic style that is timeless but can be paired with trendy pieces to give it an edgy style. I think my makeup reflects that too; less is always more.
WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU, MAKEUP-WISE?
I like a natural everyday look. Long lashes, blushed cheeks and a moisturized lip with a dash of gloss for shine.
WHAT MAKES YOU BLUSH?
When I come in contact with a good looking guy and he starts talking to me. I get so nervous.
WHAT IS THE BEST BEAUTY ADVICE YOU EVER RECIEVED?
Wear sunscreen and less is more.
FASHION AND BEAUTY ARE SO CLOSELY RELATED. FOR YOU PERSONALLY AND FOR YOUR BRAND, HOW AND WHY DO THE TWO GO HAND-IN-HAND?
Once you find the perfect outfit and accessories, your makeup is the finishing touch to complete your look. You can’t have one without the other. When we style our photo shoots for new collections, our looks really come together with finishing touches like a pop of lip color or a shimmery cheek.
