To anyone who’s ever dreamed of fusing their creative passions to create their dream job, Elena Coleman Howell of tomtom jewelry has proven that it’s worth the gamble. She not only did it, she mastered it.
The architect-turned-jewelry designer, who launched her line in 2009, has gained popularity among the general masses and celebrities alike—including Nicki Minaj, Diane Kruger, Demi Lovato and the Kardashians. Her work has been featured in numerous publications like Vogue, The New York Times, Cosmopolitan and even The Wall Street Journal.
I recently sat down with Elena, who created an exclusive Fleurette Studder bangle and earrings for blush.com, to learn about the avant-garde designer’s personal aesthetic and the beauty products she can’t live without. Read the full interview below!
As a former architect I tend to have a very modern minimalist aesthetic and draw most of my inspiration from geometric shapes and forms that can be found in both architecture and nature.
IN A COUPLE SENTENCES OR LESS … HOW DID YOU PROPEL YOUR LINE TO WHAT IT IS TODAY?
I have a very obsessive design process in which I spend countless hours figuring out the proportions, angles and materials of each piece. I think that this dedication really shows in my work and helps my line to stand out. Also, it didn’t hurt having one of my necklaces grace the décolletage of nicki minaj at the MTV movie awards!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVE BEAUTY BRAND? BEAUTY PRODUCT? WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVES YOU WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT ON A DESERTED ISLAND WITHOUT?
My favorite beauty brand is Stila. I love their Lip Enamel in Joy.
HOW DOES YOUR PERSONAL STYLE MATCH YOUR MAKEUP PERSONALITY?
My typical uniform is J Brand Jeans, Rag & Bone booties, a well worn white v-neck tee and a TOMTOM statement necklace. It’s pretty minimal with a pop of something eye-catching. My makeup is usually the same. Light cover-up with a bright red lip.
WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU, MAKEUP-WISE?
Liquid foundation, under-eye concealer, black mascara, bronzing powder, lip gloss
WHAT MAKES YOU BLUSH?
Interviews! I get really flustered in person and always say something silly to cover-up my nervousness!
