One of the first and most oft-heard beauty “rules” I can think of is the one about bar soap, and how it’s horrible for your skin. Now, depending on your skin type, this rule may hold true for you—if you’re super-sensitive or super-dry, bar soap is likely one of those things you should probably steer [...]

Age: The brink of maturity
About me: My fascination with beauty and skin care began during my formative years, when I would read everything I could get my hands on—from the utterly age-inappropriate (I climbed up to the top of my parents’ bookshelf and read “Helter Skelter” when I was 9, I think) to the mundane (the local weekly newspaper) to the stuff that really resonated (when the latest issue of Glamour or Allure was due to come in the mail … let’s just say the mail delivery people knew me by name). Today, I still like to read. So much that I earned a degree in English Literature. And while a weekend curled up with a challenging novel always sounds lovely to me, nothing makes me happier than a quiet Saturday with a stack of beauty and fashion mags. What I’m trying to say is that I’m a nerd, but a really girly one.
It should also be noted that I make drastic changes to my hair color whenever the mood strikes. I’ve been to blonde and back (and everywhere in between) more times than I can count.
What’s in your makeup bag? Sunscreen (a must for everyone), day and night moisturizers (admittedly, I have commitment issues when it comes to brands, but right now I really like April Rain) RAW Natural Minerals Foundation, Chanel La Ligne de Chanel Professional Eyeliner Duo (I’ve been obsessed for years), a couple of pinkish blushes and approximately 80 shades of eye shadow.
Your #1 must-have product: Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner. It’s just awesome. When I don’t use it, I notice a difference in my skin.
Favorite Brand(s): Dermalogica, Exuviance, Jane Iredale, PCA Skin
Your best beauty tip: It’s not just what you do to your skin on the outside. You need to take care of it from within. That means avoiding processed foods, taking in plenty of nutrients AND drinking lots of water! Also, ever notice how the happy-go-lucky types always look so radiant? Well, they do. Don’t make me resort to cheesy colloquialisms here … just be happy and don’t be so obsessed with acting your age all the time.
Your biggest beauty concern: Keeping my sensitive skin hydrated and protected, and keeping wrinkles around my eyes at bay.
You know that thin, overplucked brows are SO not in right now, right? Right. Well, it goes without saying that not all of us are blessed with supermodel arches, a la Camilla Belle or Lily Collins. (I mean, I’m certainly not.) But just because you didn’t win the dark and voluptuous eyebrow genetics lottery doesn’t [...]
Pretty much anything that makes me feel like I’m at a day spa when I’m not (and as you’d imagine … that’s most of the time, unfortunately) is golden, my book. YonKa skincare products comprise one of those “anythings.” If you’re among the many women who swear by their Phyto Contour eye cream, then you [...]
Exciting news for hyaluronic acid aficionados, scrub snobs and natural product enthusiasts (and everyone in pursuit of gorgeous, glowing skin, really): there’s a new “gold” standard when it comes to your favorite beauty formulations, and it comes to us courtesy of Goldfaden MD, who has introduced an amazing new line of antidotes for aging skin. [...]
I love summer just as much as any native Southern Californian. (Go ahead and cue the jokes about yoga, hiking and kale. Bring it!). I mean, what’s not to love? Between the months of May and September, my weekends are packed with awesome LA activities like walking to my local Farmer’s Market, hitting up hotel [...]
All right …now that we’re in the middle of July, the season of sunning is in full force. What does that mean to you? If you’re as pale as I am, I hope it means that you’re stimulating the economy with the frequent purchase of spray tans, because girlfriend, you’ve got NO business baking in [...]
Working in the beauty business, I’m constantly hit up with questions from family and friends on the topics of skin care and makeup. One topic that comes up rather frequently? Radiant, glowy skin a la Elizabeth Banks at the MTV Movie Awards! Here are my best tips for achieving it! 1. Begin within. Taking excellent [...]
I’m a product of the 80s and have always harbored a serious obsession for models and beauty and fashion. So, as you can imagine, I’ve always had a soft spot for Christie Brinkley. I remember her CoverGirl ads like they were circulating yesterday, and from the looks of things, this woman has maintained her looks [...]
Whether you’re among the palest of the pale (like me!), dark-skinned or anywhere in between, chances are you’re concerned about pigmentation and dark spots. And whether hormones or sun damage is what’s to blame, you’re well aware that getting rid of these dark spots—particularly if you don’t want to use hydroquinone—isn’t exactly an easy task. [...]
Do you love fashion as much as you love beauty? If the answer’s “yes” then you’re going to love this: Nicole Miller (fashion designer extraordinaire, pictured above at the December 2011 premiere of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) just launched a skin care line, and it’s only available at DermStore! Right now, the line—dubbed [...]
