If what Hedi Slimane is doing with Saint Laurent these days has any say in the matter, the resurgence of grunge is now officially a “thing.” Look, the dirty-hair-don’t-care vibe that defined the grunge scene of the early 1990s—flannels over florals, babydolls and biker boots, fake furs and fishnets—falls short of revolutionary for the obvious [...]

Age: The brink of maturity
About me: My fascination with beauty and skin care began during my formative years, when I would read everything I could get my hands on—from the utterly age-inappropriate (I climbed up to the top of my parents’ bookshelf and read “Helter Skelter” when I was 9, I think) to the mundane (the local weekly newspaper) to the stuff that really resonated (when the latest issue of Glamour or Allure was due to come in the mail … let’s just say the mail delivery people knew me by name). Today, I still like to read. So much that I earned a degree in English Literature. And while a weekend curled up with a challenging novel always sounds lovely to me, nothing makes me happier than a quiet Saturday with a stack of beauty and fashion mags. What I’m trying to say is that I’m a nerd, but a really girly one.
It should also be noted that I make drastic changes to my hair color whenever the mood strikes. I’ve been to blonde and back (and everywhere in between) more times than I can count.
What’s in your makeup bag? Sunscreen (a must for everyone), day and night moisturizers (admittedly, I have commitment issues when it comes to brands, but right now I really like April Rain) RAW Natural Minerals Foundation, Chanel La Ligne de Chanel Professional Eyeliner Duo (I’ve been obsessed for years), a couple of pinkish blushes and approximately 80 shades of eye shadow.
Your #1 must-have product: Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner. It’s just awesome. When I don’t use it, I notice a difference in my skin.
Favorite Brand(s): Dermalogica, Exuviance, Jane Iredale, PCA Skin
Your best beauty tip: It’s not just what you do to your skin on the outside. You need to take care of it from within. That means avoiding processed foods, taking in plenty of nutrients AND drinking lots of water! Also, ever notice how the happy-go-lucky types always look so radiant? Well, they do. Don’t make me resort to cheesy colloquialisms here … just be happy and don’t be so obsessed with acting your age all the time.
Your biggest beauty concern: Keeping my sensitive skin hydrated and protected, and keeping wrinkles around my eyes at bay.
It goes without saying that new skin care products are awesome, but there’s just something to be said about trying on a new eyeshadow for size. Maybe the instant gratification factor? Anyway, I recently got my hands on two great finds from one of my favorite new brands on blush: Gorgeous Cosmetics. When you paint [...]
I’ll admit it: I have issues when it comes to remaining loyal to skin care brands and products. Serious issues. I mean, of course there are a handful of favorites I always go back to. But with so much awesome stuff landing on my desk on a daily basis, how am I supposed to commit [...]
Hi everyone! I told myself (and uh, my boss) that I’d post a blog every day I’m in NYC for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week to recap the experience. Well, what a day today was! Five shows—one of which, I had backstage access to see the hair and makeup as it was being created (thanks, Aveda and [...]
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is HERE! I’m here too, and yeah it’s freezing for this California girl (even my NYC friends are cold!) but it’s SO exciting. One thing I’ve noticed already in the less than 24 hours I’ve been here is how much of a toll the cold weather takes on one’s skin. When I [...]
And NO, it’s NOT gel I’m talking about—I’m talking about this awesome nail polish that Deborah Lippmann has been making for years now. Just so you all know, I got a mani/pedi on Thursday, January 17. My boyfriend and I were leaving for Palm Springs the following morning, and because the news people forecasted—accurately, mind [...]
There are a lot of them out there, but a good body lotion is hard to find. If you’re like me, you have a lengthy list of requirements for these products: it must smell amazing (read: not cheap or teenage-y), it must provide the perfect amount of hydration without any greasiness, and it must not [...]
One of the first and most oft-heard beauty “rules” I can think of is the one about bar soap, and how it’s horrible for your skin. Now, depending on your skin type, this rule may hold true for you—if you’re super-sensitive or super-dry, bar soap is likely one of those things you should probably steer [...]
You know that thin, overplucked brows are SO not in right now, right? Right. Well, it goes without saying that not all of us are blessed with supermodel arches, a la Camilla Belle or Lily Collins. (I mean, I’m certainly not.) But just because you didn’t win the dark and voluptuous eyebrow genetics lottery doesn’t [...]
Pretty much anything that makes me feel like I’m at a day spa when I’m not (and as you’d imagine … that’s most of the time, unfortunately) is golden, my book. YonKa skincare products comprise one of those “anythings.” If you’re among the many women who swear by their Phyto Contour eye cream, then you [...]
