BB Cream: Beauty Buy or Beauty Bust?

Sometime last year the sudden surge of BB creams in the beauty market had me thinking I should consider trying one. Really, who wouldn’t want to consolidate multiple products into one? But where do I start? How do I know this isn’t just another fad? And what is “BB cream” anyway?

After hearing about (yet another) new BB cream on the Today show, I began my BB cream research on Google. I figured there must be something really awesome about this “miracle” multitasking cream if even up to now I’m still hearing about new product launches. My research led me to German dermatologist, Dr. Christine Schrammek, touted as the creator of the BB cream phenomenon. The all-encompassing formula was invented to treat the delicate skin of Schrammek’s post-op patients. After first taking Korea by storm, BB creams made their way West. The “BB” acronym originally stood for “blemish balm,” but probably because it became known as an all-in-one product, it soon adopted the name “beauty balm.”bb-cream

I was relieved to find that under the ambiguous product name, many brands have created unique and distinct formulas. From “multi-action makeup” to “enhancing moisturizer,” brands have narrowed down the focus of their creams to better fit the needs of their customers.

In an effort to sort through the seemingly oversaturated market, I began my search by gathering a list of potential BB cream benefits to help me find the newest addition to my daily routine.

Potential BB Cream Benefits:

  • Cover
  • Conceal
  • Prime
  • Smooth
  • Brighten
  • Illuminate
  • Enhance Glow
  • Color-Correct
  • Reduce Redness & Hyperpigmentation
  • Minimize Pores
  • Calm irritation
  • Moisturize
  • Treat Signs of Aging
  • Offer UV Protection and SPF
  • Other Considerations:
  • Paraben-Free
  • Cruelty-Free
  • All-Natural
  • Vegan

I decided to focus on a formula that would even my skin tone, as well as hydrate and brighten my skin. I am allergic to parabens so I knew I had to find a product that’s formulated without them. Also I was planning to wear my BB cream under full-coverage powder, so I needed it to work well as a primer and foundation, too.

After reading through a sea of product descriptions and articles, I finally decided to try B. Kamins’ BB Cream. The timing turned out to be especially fitting, as my complexion seemed to be getting more dull and dry as each winter day passed. I was surprised to find that this 8-in-1 product was exactly what I was looking for. It is very lightweight, it moisturizes, it evens out my skin tone and it works great as a makeup base. More importantly, it has not given my sensitive skin any issues! In my opinion “BB” definitely stands for Beauty Buy!
