DIY Home Microdermabrasion – Is It For You?

Microdermabrasion has become very popular due to the non-invasive yet effective treatment of exfoliating the skin deeper & more thoroughly than traditional exfoliating methods.  This treatment was previously only available at spas and doctor’s offices for roughly $150 a treatment, but over the last few years, home microdermabrasion machines have become available so that you can now perform the same treatments in your own home at a fraction of the cost.  This post will focus on these at-home microdermabrasion devices and who is a candidate for using them.

There have been several at-home microdermabrasion devices that have come to market in the last few years.  This is great for the consumer because microdermabrasion is highly effective at removing the top layers of skin, thus gradually erasing signs of aging, blemishes and some surface scarring, among other conditions.  Before the development of these home devices, you had to go to a spa or dermatologist to have microdermabrasion treatments done. Microdermabrasion is best done as a continuous treatment plan, not just once or twice, so the costs and time spent on in-office visits can add up quickly.  With a home device, you can get nearly the same results on your schedule, in a fraction of the time and cost.

Popular Microdermabrasion Devices use a dual-action “peeling” and suction method that involve using an abrasive tip made from crystals, or preferably real diamonds (like the MicrodermMD), to exfoliate while the suction removes the surface debris with each sweep across the skin.  Because you are removing the top layers of your skin, it is normal to experience redness and slight irritation not unlike a minor sunburn.  This feeling should go away between several hours to a day.  More sensitive skin could take slightly longer to return to normal.  The new top layer of skin will feel clean, clear and baby smooth.  After each treatment, your skin will also be primed to absorb skincare products, making it the ideal time to apply high quality anti-aging creams and serums. In fact, microdermabrasion is a great way to enhance the effectiveness of your existing skincare regimen, since the products are so easily absorbed into the skin following a treatment. If you have any of the following skin conditions, microdermabrasion could be beneficial for you:

  • Age spots, liver spots, or discoloration
  • Sun damage or blemishes
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Skin tone that is blotchy or uneven
  • Acne scars that have texture or color
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Some active acne such as blackheads
  • Enlarged pores or pores that are clogged
  • Stretch marks
  • Keratosis Pilaris

You should consult your doctor before having microdermabrasion treatments if you have any of the following:

  • Lesions, warts, or recent herpes outbreak
  • Sunburn or sun sores
  • Active rosacea
  • Auto-immune disorders
  • Skin Cancer
  • Vascular lesions
  • Any open wounds, sores or cuts
  • Taking oral blood thinners (anti-coagulants)

In conclusion, at-home microdermabrasion treatments are a wonderful skin care option for most people.  From gradually erasing the signs of aging to keeping your skin in tip-top shape, microderm is for almost everyone. Treatments can be done on any skin tone, and you do not need to avoid the sun. You can find out more about at-home microdermabrasion by visiting our website:
