Happy fall equinox! As a self-proclaimed “summer hater,” I am quite pleased that the return of autumn is finally here. In celebration, I’ve put together a few of my favorite fall beauty tips for keeping your skin healthy, your hair strong and your makeup seasonal as the weather changes.
Pumpkin isn’t only for pie…
As the temperature drops, your skin is prone to chapping and wind damage, which can leave your complexion feeling dry and uncomfortable. Luckily, one of the best dry facial skin remedies is also one of the most prominent autumn staples – pumpkin! Not only is it highly moisturizing, it’s also rich in vitamins A and C, which can nourish, condition and protect your skin with antioxidants.
If you’re the do-it-yourself type, you can make your own pumpkin mask by mixing two tablespoons of cooked pumpkin with one tablespoon of honey. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
If you’re like I am and prefer to purchase your skin care formulas, check out Eminence’s Pumpkin Latte Hydration Mask. Made with organic plant oils, extracts, pulps and purées, this mask offers all the benefits of pumpkin, plus a slew of other benefits from natural sources.
Shedding isn’t only for dogs and cats…
In fall, animals tend to shed in order to make room for their new winter coats. Just like our furry friends, we also experience increased shedding during this season due to changes in the weather and sun patterns. Don’t worry – you’re not going to go bald. However, it is important that you practice exemplary hair care during this time to ensure that your new hair growth is as healthy and strong as possible.
A simple autumn hair care regimen includes shampooing and conditioning 2-3 times a week instead of every day. This helps keep the hair and scalp from becoming dry or uncomfortable. If you find that your hair appears too oily between washings, try using a dry shampoo to create the appearance of freshly cleansed locks. If your hair is in need of extra conditioning, nourishment or hydration, use a treatment product featuring coconut oil. Long used in India to create silky, glossy tresses, coconut oil strengthens the hair while improving shine.
Changing colors isn’t only for leaves…
One of my favorite things about a new season is changing out my eye makeup and other cosmetics for new, seasonal shades. Autumn is all about warm, earthy colors – try rich browns, mossy greens, deep purples or glimmering golds to achieve a fall-inspired look that will make heads turn.
