I like to think of Earth Day as a New Year’s holiday for the earth. It reminds me to make goals and try a little harder this year. I’m already improving on recycling—taking a cue from my earth-wise sister and using a smaller can for trash and a larger one for recycling (it definitely makes you think before you toss). However, figuring out how to be eco-smart about my beauty supplies was a little harder.

So, here are some tips to keep the earth and your skin looking beautiful.

Search for sustainable ingredients

Some all natural skin care and organic beauty products are already using ingredients from sustainable agriculture, but as the green movement continues, more beauty brands are working with farms that ensure they are not depleting natural resources.

Buy refillable

It isn’t just a great way to save money, buying refillable also keeps less waste from ending up in the landfill. Refillable containers are often available in beauty cosmetics, like powders and eye shadows, as well as hand, body and facial cleansers.

Choose biodegradable

Using chemical-based products isn’t only a concern for its absorption in the body, but also its absorption into the water supply and soil. Many botanical skin care and herbal skin care brands use formulas that break down safely. Unsure about what’s on your label? Consumer Reports makes it easy.

Recycled & Recyclable

Many beauty care brands are choosing recycled packaging, but there are those that go a step farther and actually use recyclable bottles and jars. Make sure to check the packaging of your skin care products to see if your favorite brands provide the best of both.
